How does card counting help you in blackjack?

Question

I know how to card count, but I dont see how knowing what the count is helps you. Does it tell you what the next card is gonna be? Please help me out.

card counting is a system that lets you know if the deck is more or less likely to give up good cards (10, face cards, aces).  If the count says that the deck is good, you bet more. If the count says the deck is not so good, you bet less.

The idea being that over the long run, you should come out ahead. This of course has caused untold numbers of people to lose their shirts.

Like anything, you need a LOT of practice to be good at it. Otherwise, you'll get hosed every time.
