Around that time the whole western world was afraid of communism - it was known as the "Red Scare". The Soviet Union and China were both very powerful communist nations at the time. China was supplying the North Vietnamese Army (NVA) with weapons and supplies.

Australia fought in support of South Vietnam. Australia was fearful that if Vietnam fell to communism, then other neighbouring countries would too. We feared a domino effect all the way through south-east Asia until it arrived at our doorstep.
