  1. Around that time the whole western world was afraid of communism - it was known as the "Red Scare". The Soviet Union and China were both very powerful communist nations at the time. China was supplying the North Vietnamese Army (NVA) with weapons and supplies.

    Australia fought in support of South Vietnam. Australia was fearful that if Vietnam fell to communism, then other neighbouring countries would too. We feared a domino effect all the way through south-east Asia until it arrived at our doorstep.


  2. America probably did more to influence Australia's fear of communists than the Chinese.

    Johnson posted the "domino " theory , which like WMDs was total BS but Australia still followed along  ( we have learn't nothing in 40 plus years) which was proven to be wrong and America went to war on the lie of the gulf of tonkin incident.

    America had the McCarty era , Australia had issues with defectors wanting to live here and the whole world was engulfed in a cold war .
