  1. In my college hydrology class the professor stated many times that the wars of the future will be fought over water.  The reason behind this is because of population growth and ability of water resources to sustain it.  End game senario if you do not have enough water for everyone to drink people will die and if people are dying what is to stop them from fighting for the water that remains.

To answer your question Canada should not sell their water to the United States because of the increased glacier melt that been been occuring.  Much of Canadas water resources has simply melted and flowed into the United States naturally.  Due to warming trends not neccessarily related to CO2 and global warming but warming trends not the less.  Canada must maintain strategic reserves to ensure the prosperity of her people.  Should this global warming problem continue if in fact that is the problem why should Canada share with the country that prepetuated the problem.  Careful those words could start a war in this future society where water rights are and issue.  Furthermore if the United States cannot see fit to share its water with Mexico why should Canada share with the United States.

This second link is the exact answer you are looking for this is satelitte imagery of the shrinking Aral sea which has had all of its water taken away from it.

Also you should look into subsidence due to over pumping of groundwater reserves.  I believe there are examples of this in California.

Do not listen to the second answer he has cited Hoover Dam as an area of little impact.  The entire riparian ecosystem down stream has changed due to the Dam.  All of the warm water fish that lived there previously have died off and been replaced by trout which thrive on the cold water put off by the Dam.  I did not mention but that same Hydrology proffessor worked at Hoover Dam.  Attached below is one example of changes to riparian ecosystems a dam will have.

  2. The world has more than enough water. The problem isn't about running out of water. The problem is getting the water where it needs to go, and how to most effectively use the water you have on hand.

America does not need Canadian water. If they are stupid enough to buy it, Canada should happily sell it to them.

Unless you are talking about draining a swamp or lake or wetland, there is very little effect on the climate. Human operations are currently too small scale to have much impact.

Take Hoover Dam, a giant lake in the dessert. Go a half mile from shore and its the same as it ever was.

The definitive source for data here is from the United Nations (it has faults, but at least most entities can agree it is fairly neutral)
