That's a pretty broad question.  Convective currents called Hadley cells assist in transporting excess heat from earth's equator to the colder polar regions.  Convection in the form of thuderstorms helps release built up energy in the form of heat and electric charge and to restore a balance of sorts to the atmosphere.   Some areas are more prone to thunderstorms than others due to location, and this is reflected in thier climatological record (which is directly tied to weather).
