  1. -They learn the skills that they need for adulthood such as sharing, turn taking, empathy and patience.

-Learning it early means they have time to practice and refine their skills for the adultworld.

-If children are cooperative they tend to have more friends, better relationships with others etc and so will become well adjusted adults and usually have less social difficulties.

  2. By teaching children cooperation, you teach them to share, work with others, and get along better in society.  After all, much of school requires cooperation to complete projects and other assignments.  When children learn those cooperation skills, they are better able to get along in the work world as they are more willing to work with other adults on a project (two working on something is faster/better than just one in many cases).

  3. True story: I was on the admissions committee for a university department. We get an application from someone whose grades and test scores are all solid, and their research is ground-breaking. Two letters of recommendation are vaguely positive (though strangely similar). The third speaks highly of the applicant's ability, but in the last paragraph, mentions that nobody in their university can work with this individual.

Do you think any of the professors said, "Hey, let's let this one in!"? Not a one. That decision was unanimous, all the thumbs were down.

So these days, when we're talking at school about what skills or kinds of intelligence are most important for our students, some people say, "You gotta know math." Somebody else says, "Number one thing is computers." I say "Uh-huh. If you don't know how to get along with other people, nothing else you know is going to do you any good!"

  4. teaching children to cooperate and work together ensures that they won't grow up to be selfish, self centered jerks...
