  1. Decompression sickness is a result of nitrogen bubbles being released back into the bloodstream usually due to a diver ascending too quickly.

Nitrogen is absorbed into the blood stream as the diver breathes compressed air while under water. It will equalize itself in the blood at the pressure it is being inhaled at, which is higher as the diver goes deeper.

A recompression chamber will re-pressurize a bent diver using air to simulate the diver still being under water and at depth. That will force the nitrogen back into the blood, where it is harmless. Then, the chamber will very slowly release the pressure on the diver over a period of several hours, to allow the nitrogen to escape like it's supposed to.
