Hello everyone. I have a question my husband and I have fought for his disablity for many years (about 3 1/2 years)..

You have to understand my husband has such sivere siezures that he is unable to be home alone having anywhere from 1 to 4 everyday and have even seen 6 in one day... As a result I also have had to be home in order to assure his safety. He is very very high fuctioning really normal as anyone else it is just that with so many siezures out life is a little different then anyone elses...

Anyways for the last 3 1/2 years he has been home on welfare and for the last 1 1/2 I have been forced to be home with him because of how bad they got. Now are are looking at getting a settlement from disablity for that 3 1/2 years...

We are just so damb tired of worring about the electric and phone bill all of the time and are always hundreds of dollars behind in the electric bill they keep us just shy of shut off all of the time and of course the electic company is very graceful with us...

We would like to take that money and buy a small trailer in a park that would house us not in a fancy way but in a way that we can pay our rent and also keep our utilties up (and of course pay off the electic bill and phone bill) ..

The concern is will welfare take that money from us. They have put alot into my husbands health.... Does anyone know how this works....

We don't know when the check will come yet we only know he has been approved does anyone know how long it takes them to pay up as well...

  1. "The concern is will welfare take that money from us. They have put alot into my husbands health...."

Not they...WE have put a lot of money into his health. Yes you will have to pay it back from the check.  They (we) are not taking it from you, it was ours to begin with. Taxpayers loaned you money to get by until he got approved for a non welfare welfare program.  Why would you not want to pay us back?  Perhaps then we could buy a nice little trailer and not have to pay rent.

  2. I dealt with a guy once that had the same type of issue involving welfare and disability.  I'm sure every situation can be different, but he had a chunk of his settlement taken out to pay back welfare for monies they paid out for him.

  3. You will have to pay welfare back for any cash assistance that they gave you while you were waiting for disability. You will not have to pay back medicaid or food stamp benefits.

Been through this myself. Your only option while waiting for disability is to go on welfare. Ignorant people have no idea what it is like to fight for years to get benefits that you worked for and are entitled to.

Buying a trailer will not disqualify him for disability. SSD is not based on assets.

As far as time wise,I think it took about 60 days for my back pay to come, but that was several years ago. I've heard it takes longer now,but not sure.

    Good luck to you.

  4. If you have a VERY trusted family member or friend, you could put the trailer in their name and rent from them.

If you own the trailer, it'll disqualify you for welfare and him for disability.

Sorry about that - the government doesn't provide social services with an eye to solving problems.

  5. Not sure, but I have serious doubts that you could draw SSI and Welfare at the same time. The Government works in mysterious ways so it would be hard to tell. SSI can only be garnished for taxes and Child Support so I doubt they could take the backpay from you. Taking you to court for the Welfare payments could happen.
