  1. yup, less oxygen!!

  2. I don't think that drinking out of a straw gets you drunk any faster; myth.

  3. Geek Girl is the first intelligent answer. When people drink with a straw they tend to drink faster. When more alcohol is consumed in a short period of time the physical effects (intoxication) are greater.

    DeeJay gave a good answer.

Kfaulk21 almost was there but fell short.

The other answers are just foolish to put it nicely.

The oxygen answers are comical but ultimately and sadly ignorant.

    Popcorn7:

No. Perhaps some small amount of alcohol vapor does enter the blood steam via the olfactory membranes but very little indeed. But the great majority is absorbed in the stomach and intestines. The warm alcohol does find its way into the blood faster as blood vessels are dilated from the warm liquid increasing the transfer rate.

I do give you an out if you were trying to explain sensory processes of the olfactory tri-geminal senses. Then you were on the right track but this does not address the rate or effects of intoxication asked.

    Tim:

    No no no. Your answer:

"Most alcohol is absorbed through your esophagus, not your stomach. Drinking through a straw causes a slower trickle of alcohol down your throat which gives it more time to be absorbed as opposed to a chug which reaches the stomach faster.

This holds true for drinking shots of beer too. Try drinking 72 shots of beer (one six pack) or funneling a whole six pack and see which gets you more drunk.

Oxygen has nothing to do with it.

Where should I start with your (nearly) completely wrong answer?

First alcohol enters the blood through the stomach and intestines and not the esophagus.

By chucking beer or shots of distilled alcohol the person consumes more alcohol in a shorter period of time. The rate of alcohol reduction by the liver is fixed. So by increasing the amount consumed the BAC is increased. The result is a greater degree of intoxication.

Again it has NOTHING to do with the esophagus.

Okay you are correct that oxygen has nothing to do with intoxication from alcohol.

Oxygen does not cause use to get "more drunk or drunk faster." In fact it is the lack of oxygen that contributes to intoxication. Also the physical action of a straw requires no air (thus oxygen) to be drawn into it for proper functioning. The siphon action of a straw requires no air to be draw into the straw so that an artificial vacuum is created.

  4. My guess would be that you'd get drunk faster because most people tend to drink liquids faster through straws.

Sometimes when you're not dying of thirst (as that would bias things horribly), do a few little experiments with a glass of water or something else non-alcoholic you like to drink from time to time.  See how fast you get it down both ways if you're just hanging around the house watching TV or talking to friends and sipping on it occasionally.

  5. I would have thought that as you are drinking slower, it would take longer.

  6. It is the tecnique that you a using to get drunk faster. Drinking through a straw requires you to suck in the drink as well as oxygen. Try this next time you drink and or eat something take a little in your mouth and taste it then do it again but this time suck in some air and then taste it your sences should tatse a diff. in the food. This is also why people drink sake and brandy warm because the steam or hot air rises faster into you nose and into your brain causeing a lasting effect on your sences.

  7. Less Oxygen.

  8. does it? lol

i guess we learn something new everyday then ;)

  9. The only reason is some people sip more at one time through a straw than by mouth.

  10. Most alcohol is absorbed through your esophagus, not your stomach.
