Especially if I have to drive 5 miles further to buy the stuff than I do with regular food?

  1. Maybe it gives you less gas.

  2. Paducah - You are so wrong it does fight global warming, and Al Gore flying all over the world delivering a detailed factual and elegant speach does fight global warming by letting citizens from around the globe know how much impact people have on a planet.  Its a Truth he is telling - it's a call to action.   People are talking about terra forming other planets.  They know this can be achieved because we are reforming this planet albeit a non-life sustaining change.   Man is part of the world, we need the world to survive.  We are currently in a struggle for our survival.....this is a desperate moment for man....we'll either continue our journey forward adapting and evolving or we'll be removed.

Your 5 mile additional drive needs to be made up by not driving 5 miles to somewhere else.  However, the energy saved in economically sound organic farming through reduced irrigation, reduced pesticides, reduced soil preparation, reduced erosion, reduced commercial fertilizers, addition of land for tree replanting, and the reuse of waste chaff to generate methane/hydrogen or other non-petrol fuels more than offset your added 5 minutes on the road.   Once your current nonorganic food supplier notices you aren't shopping at their store - they will stock the organic brands and you get the improved environment and the 5 minutes back and 4 pounds of CO2 back as well.

    Good question!

  3. Pesticides aren't used on organic food so there aren't any chemicals going into the air and destroying the ozone layer.

  4. In general it doesn't. However, there is an arguement for eating locally produced foods as many of the supermarkets will drive and fly food around the world/country in order to deliver cheaper food (or more profits).

Organics is more to do with not eating pesticides or contributing the the increase in bioaccumulating chemicals in the ecosystem.

  5. You are so right it does not fight global warming, and Al Gore flying all over the world giving his silly *** speach does not fight global warming. Its a convient lie he is telling. Nothing to do with the truth,

  6. the petro-chemical inputs for industrial farming, food processing, packaging and transport all contribute to climate change. A tractor may drive over a field 8 times or more with different sprays & stuff.

Organic food may be produced nearly as industrially & globaly. but in general it is produced more locally and with more attention to minimise inputs & waste; and greater awareness of environmental issues all 'round.

Organic farming also requires building up the soil so it holds water better, less errosion, and a healthy balance of microbes & organisms that will lock up carbon in bio-mass.
