How does fish farming effect the water supply??

  1. it can pollute the water with the large amounts of waste from fish. also when fish a gather very close they release lots of that acid fish have that makes them kind of slimy pollutes water also.thats pretty much it.


  2. It depends on the system. Closed system units recycle the water. Open system units use the water and then waste it. Pond/ lake/ ocean culture uses existing bodies of water. With open systems and culture in bodies of water all depends on the populations for a given amount of water as to how much change over how much time one can expect. High density fish farming in a natural ecosystem has the potential to be damaging by accumulating waste so this may have to be addressed threw varied water maintenance programs. Look at equipment offered by various Aquaculture suppliers to get a better idea of how management is accomplished. I have been involved with farming high densities of shellfish in the ocean for many years and their with these species I have not seen any issues with water quality management. Small fresh water bodies in culture can have issues, though.
