Nursing practices have changed greatly over the last few decades.  

The only quality that we carry over from Florence Nightingale is probably her compassion and TLC, of which she was a great example.

You must remember that nurses were not looked upon favorable during those times.  They were considered dirty and much like the whores, because they tended to the human body.  With all this stigma attached to nursing, Ms. Nightingale showed a great deal of caring and compassion.
