How does free american tv work?

how many channels do you get and what r they called?? I'm just wondering cos I'm australian and we get like 5 channels free and like 100 with foxtel (cable).

for Free we get abc nbc cbs pbs and 3 local Chanel's on cable we get 1200 Chanel's including 8 HBO etc

The free broadcast (antenna) channels in the US are NBC, CBS, ABC, Fox, CW, ion, and PBS. There are also two Spanish language channels - Telemundo and Univision and in some local areas other non-enlish language channels, like Chinese or Korean. In some areas there are also independent (not affiliated with a national network) channels.
