How does hi speed internet work?

When the cable company comes, will they just drop off a modem, then I need to get a router myself?

Also what is the difference in speed between 12 Mbps and 6 Mbps for example? Is it worth the extra money?

Yes. You will probably need to get a router yourself, although when I got Verizon FiOS they were together. After they come, you will probably need a router. You need to plug in the cable that looks like a phone line, but a little bigger (called ethernet) from your modem to your router. A cable from your modem to the wall will also need to be plugged in. The 12Mbps is definitely worth the money, and will preform much better. Also, a good router is eminent. well, the internet is a network of every server and computer that is connected to the internet. theoretically, 12Mbps will be 2x as fast as 6Mbps, but this is not always the case. If your neighborhood has a lot of people online at once, then there's a lot more data going through the cables in your neighborhood, which means you wont get the full speed of your hi-speed internet. weather or not the hi-speed router is worth it depends on what you plan on doing, if you're just web browsing, then its not worth it, and that should also make you question the value of hi-speed internet service in the first place. If you're making big downloads or playing online games, then it is definitely worth it
