How does holdem inspector / poker odds calculators work?

How do poker odds calculators like the holdem inspector work i.e how do they intercept your cards and follow the bets, game play etc? Why are they only compatible with some sites? Please advise. thanks

Forget those programs. You only need to know basic math to be successful at poker. Instead, spend money on programs that can really help your game, like Poker Tracker. Besides, some of those calculator programs are prohibited by poker sites. I know holdem inspector is prohibited by both FTP and Stars.
