How does hypnosis work in surgery?

okay, so my uncle recently had a big knee surgery, and he didn't use any anesthetic at all. he had been seeing a hypnotherapist for the past 6 months, and had learned to control his pain, even take it away. he found a doctor who was willing to do the surgery without anesthetics. my uncle went into surgery, and said he felt no pain at all, and no pain afterward. i haven't had much of a chance to talk to him too much about this, but i was pretty in shock. how does this work? what kind of mental training is needed to get to this level?

  1. Hello Rick,

Like Tom had said below this is called "Glove Anesthesia" it is one of the deeper states of hypnosis.  The power of the mind has the ability to block pain - You may have seen someone get hurt and they are not in immediate pain due to shock (the mind blocks this pain in the shock state as well).  On a personal note my sister-in-law used a technique called HypnoBirthing to give birth to twin boys with no anesthetics and felt no pain at all.  Hypnotism is a great tool!

  2. i've heard of this being done before...this one dude did a root canal simply by hypnotising himself...you need utter COMPLETE control over your mind...i think he said something about taking his mind to another place, away from his body. and you need a lot of spiritual power...

now i'm not one to believe in all this...nothing beats getting euphoric after an hour under anasthesia...but you need to 'connect' with yourself on various levels...talk to the hypnotherapist your uncle went to...

how does this work...well, your body gets the signals for pain, but because your 'conciousness' isnt there, you can't take any action...about reflex actions i have no clue...

  3. Hello

    This is called Medical Hypnosis.

The subconscious mind can help us acheive anything, including complete numbness, illness & pain removal. To use hypnosis for weight & smoking issues alone is to not explore all of its wonderful uses.

You uncle would have been to see the hypnotherapist probably several times to prep for the surgery via the hypnosis to get the comands in place.

  4. the technique he may have used is called glove anesthesia and if it works at all it works very well. The main problem is that you may feel so comfortable you forget to use it. Any practitioner of classic hypnosis can teach you the technique and show you how to control it. it is not very difficult. I have one student that had two root canals done in one hour. with out any chemical anesthesia, gas included. I know this happened because I did the induction in the doctors waiting room qnd then walked her in and sat her in the chair.

with out asking I feel you live in the U.K.- it is the only place in the English speaking world where the hospitals would allow this to be done.
