How does icing and oilment make hamstring tears recover faster?

i just got a slight hamstring tear today, so i was figuring how icing and rubbing of oilment help it to recover faster? should i ice or rub it? i tore it 1hr ago so would icing it help now? its not a strain its a slight tear.

  2. Ice would be effective on an acute injury like yours. How it works is that when body tissues are first cooled, nerve cells in that area force nearby blood vessels to constrict. This reduces blood flow to the area. When the temperature of the area continues to drop, nerve activity is depressed and blood vessels open up again, bringing in blood which re-warms the tissues, even though cold is still being applied. Once the nerves heat up (because of the inflow of blood), they shut down the blood vessels again, commencing a new cycle of chilling and warming.

    Limit ice applications to 10 minutes & wrap the ice-pack in a towel to prevent the ice sticking to your skin. It also prevents running the risk of flushing the site of injury with blood and water or freezing some superficial skin and nerve cells to death. Try about two 10-minute icings per hour as often as possible during the first 24 to 48 hours after an injury. Then, use the same technique (two 10-minute icings separated by a 30-minute break) about three to five times a day until the injury resolves itself.

    You should also try some self-massage or if you can afford it, see a sports masseur. Massage has a number of benefits.

  3. I doubt that any ointment is going to help, but using ice will reduce the swelling which will reduce the time necessary for repairs.

    Use a wet ice, not a dry ice pack. Keep the ice on the area for about 10 to 15 minutes or until numb. Then let is rest for the same amount of time, and repeat.

    Gentle massage can also help because it improves the circulation to the area.

    Use the ice several times each day.

  4. i tore my hamstring 3months ago and it still isn't like it used to be....you just need to put ice on it right now.then when it starts to heal a little,try to workout with it but take it real easy because it could make it worst.but right now i can run,but not my fastest YET.so yea,just dont do too much work with it now,just let it rest!
