I saw a TV commercial where Olympic champion Michael Phelps makes a comment saying he thinks "- being an American is the greatest feeling in the world."

What does it feel like to be American? Why does it feel so great as Michael Phelps put it?

  1. AMERICA.....f*****k YEAH!  Coming your way to save the motherf*cking day yeah!

    Only joking.

  2. He is feeling the same pride in his country as I hope other atheletes feel in theirs. Nothing wrong with that.  People criticize us so much, but the immigration percentage keeps rising....go figure.

  3. Hmmm. I would think "feeling American" would be no different than feeling French, or English or Russian. It's what you're used to. I lived in Canada for a year. I felt neither American nor Canadian living there. Perhaps it would be different if you lived in a country radically different from your own. Say, an American in the Middle East? Especially an American woman in the Middle East?

Just some thoughts. Who knows what Phelps meant by that comment. Maybe it was just a winning high.

  4. Right now its that time of the month so I'm feeling alittle bloated, irritated. Not the best feeling in the world.

  5. That's an interesting question.  I feel patriotism, and I feel pride, but I'm not sure how one feels "American."

I feel blessed to be in a country with so many opportunities.  I feel grateful that I've been able to live my life free of many of the worries that plague the every day lives of people in much of the world.  I feel responsible for my foot print on the world.

But I'm sure others in other countries have similar feelings of pride, patriotism, and responsibility.

I agree with him that knowing I'm American is usually an amazing feeling.

  6. I love living in america because its like nowhere else in the world. So many different cultures in one place,so many different foods, cities. Can go from being poor to owning a dozen mansions. Knowing we will always come out winning in the end.

  7. It makes me feel itchy in certain areas.

  8. Extraordinary!

  9. He is American, what else could he say???

  10. I don't know much about other countries. I know what we are taught in school. We are told America is the most free country in the world, there bye making it the greatest. However they don't teach us about other countries and their govt unless it's a dictatorship. They never teach us about the french, Italian, British, Australian govt. So what we're given to compare the USA to it is the greatest feeling in the world.

So basically we very well may not be the greatest or most free nation in the world, but that is what is drilled into us since childhood. Don't get me wrong though I have a great since of pride for my country, and fell as Michael Phelps does. Just trying to give a logical unbiased answer.

  11. The United States is the only place I've ever been, so I really don't have a perspective other than that. I do however feel blessed at times, because I see other nations and their people struggling and I do feel grateful that I live in the US. Even though in every nation there are people struggling it seems overall that the US has more resources to deal with this than other nations. Just my view.

  12. Sooooo many athletes used that line, they prob told him what to say
