How does it work that you can remove any scratches from almost anything using toothpaste?

scientifically explain please I don't understand it how does toothpaste do that please give all the details, this is so i can easily find the information for a science project just so i dont have to search the whole internet for some information please help and ITS NOT CHEATING

  1. Toothpaste has a very, very fine abrasive.  The household item Comet is also an abrasive, but larger.  Think of toothpaste as 800 grit sandpaper and Comet as 100 grit sandpaper.  The higher the number, the finer (less rough) the paper.

    It also works real well on white leather shoes (sneakers), it almost makes them look new again.

Toothpaste has an abrasive in it.   The abrasive is very fine silica. that acts like sandpaper, only it is so fine, that it polishes.   On your teeth, it removes hardened food stuck to your teeth, and on things like a painted auto fender, it will also polish an area when rubbed repeatedly across the surface of the paint.   You can liken toothpaste, to auto polish.  Same principle, only different vehicle to carry the silica polishing crystals.
