How does lightning form? and what about thunder, where does that loud sound come from?

my teachers are teaching [duh] us about where and how lighting and thunder come from and how they form? but i really don't understand her. can you help me?

  1. the best way to describe lighting is its like a short circut. from a positivily charged cloud to a negivitly charged cloud or other item ( ground, antenna, tree, person. ect)


  2. Thunder is easy, I'll try to tackle that last.  Lightening happens when + charged electrons flow to ground.  When the positive (+) electrons in the air find a path to ground (-), they "take it", causing lightening to happen.  

    Thunder is simply the sound makes as lightening happens.  These charged particles travel very fast, and break the sound barrier.  Just as a jet makes a sonic boom, so does the lightening bolt as it goes through the air.  Thunder is simply lightening's sonic boom.

    Hopefully this matches what your teacher said.  Is there something in particular that your not understanding?  It might make it easier to help you if we know what your having issues understanding.
