  1. In fact the role of media is to shape public opinion in a positive way.  Media, particularly, visual i.e. TV is doing contararily.   Newspapers are doing well but visual media acts in a very irresponsible way. For eg. any murder or rape case is discussed and visualised again and again. They know a person is committing suicide.  Instead of preventing him, they are busy with shooting incidence.  They put their nose in personal life of a person.  If anybody comments against them, they add mirch masala and defame the person. Even top politicians are afraid of media.

  2. media shapes public opinion day and night. people have no other source of news and opinion. so media shapes the public opinion. in many court cases, media has played a significant role.

  3. Media has always made an important dent in public opinion. A person may be having his own contacts may be ten, twenty, fifty or maximum one hundred but he/she can not have that much as MEDIA has. One may impose his/her opinion on some people but people in large are untouched. But MEDIA has deep contacts or to say many more people read media news so it affect more and more people. Take the case of election, if a candidate tries to reach individual person personally, maximum how many people one can get in touch but through MEDIA he/she will be in touch with much larger voters. No doubt some will accept and some will reject but that is the part of game.

  4. The most convincing and effective  way media has ever affected public opinion with the media (electronic and print) becoming an important agent of political change was in the break up of the erstwhile Soviet Union and the bloodless coups in the Eastern European states between 1989 to 1991.

The western media (with sponsoring recieved from the Western goverments)kept up a steady barrage on the Communist system/governments by broadcasting thro' its radio stations in West Germany , Austria, Finland etc the shortcomings of the Communist political system. These broadcasts could be listened to behind the Iron Curtain -but clandestinely.

Discussions about freedom of speech/choice, private enterprise and its advantages to individuals  and the deliberate and callous(even cynical ) use of power by the USSR govrnment -be it in the Baltic States or in the Soviet republics or in  Russia  was  the information the target audience got.

The conditions in the Eastern European nations were regularly compared to that in the rich , prosperous West .With the level of education, type of population (demographics), history and the huge losses both of the blocs suffered before 1945 being similar the people in the Eastern bloc eventually realised that their political system was fundamentally flawed and the oligarchy in the Soviet Union and the dictators of the Eastern European nations had to be overthrown.

Music ranging from Jazz to pop to USA's western country music were broadcast  to keep up the entertainment value of the stations.

Emotions eventually did boil over first in East Germany(1989), Cezhslovakia, Hungary and governments there were overthrown in bloodless coups.Eventually we had the spectacle of Boris Yeltsin ordering good old Gorby (Gorbachev ) in 1991 to read a speech in the Supreme Soviet dissolving the Communist party of the USSR!

There was no Nuclear war,  bloodshed was minimal and the West's most powerful enemy was vanquished.

The catalyst or even the main instigator to this coup and eventual victory was the Western media.

  5. Only two examples are needed

    A) Russia has a law making sure at least 10 percent of all news is positive. This is obviously in response to public opinion of the government.

    b) Vietnam. Nixon's idea that the Media lost the war is absolutely true. The day by day statistics of the dead, as well as the disturbing footage from the Tet Offensive show how fear gets instilled in the American public.

  6. By stating again and again an opinion or a viewpoint ,even when

  12. Media shapes public opinion by telling between the lines. They interpret the sentence/view very very wrong way.

  13. It is said that if you speak a lie 100 times before someone, it becomes truth (perception-wise) for him/her. Media of today is doing the same thing.
