  1. water flows down until it cannot flow down any further.  The rock underneath keeps it from flowing further down.

  5. where else do you expect it to go? i can't go back upstream and it's way too much to evaporate. It can't go into the ground because there are natural barriers (e.g. soil, bedrock etc.) so it really is stuck there. which is good for me because i am a keen open water swimmer.
