Mucociliary dysfunction is a common feature of chronic airway diseases in humans. The mucociliary apparatus consists of three functional compartments, that is, the cilia, a protective mucus layer, and an airway surface liquid (ASL) layer, which work in concert to remove inhaled particles from the lung.

Increased mucus production in the respiratory tract is a symptom of many common illnesses, ie, the cold and influenza. Similarly, hypersecretion of mucus can occur in inflammatory respiratory diseases such as pulmonary allergies, asthma, and chronic bronchitis.

The columnar epithelium have ducts/ goblet cells that produce mucus in the lungs even if the celia is damaged. It may be hard to move the mucus around without the celia, though.
