How does music help in the developement of a child?

Children can learn to recognize patterns and sounds in speech. My kids like the songs with directions in them. Through these songs, like the bear hunt song or the bean bag dance (Kids In Action, its a great CD for kids, you should get it!). These songs put actions to music and if they want to do the same dance or game the others are doing, they have to listen to the words. It teaches great  listening skills. I was in the toddler class where I work, and there was this little boy dancing to the music. There was a continuous beat like a drum or something.He was keeping the beat with his hand in the air and one finger pointing upwards, moving up and down. The CD started to skip, and the beat was interrupted as the CD was stuck on the same sound for about 10 seconds. I watched him as he kept the beat, and then when the beat was interrupted, I watched him "skip" in a way.  When the skip happened instead of stopping cause it was different, or saying "uh-oh!" like many children do when the stereo skips, he kept going but changed with the beat. His hand was going the same way as the skipping on the stereo. It was quite interesting. Children can pick up great detail from music. Play a song like this and watch them, just observe. You will learn a lot your self.

There are many benefits to children through music.

Moving to the beat & rhythm of music enables children to use their motor skills.

Many ideas & information can be taught to a child through a song.

Using musical instruments with the beat of music teaches children about counting, listening & coordination.

Children can also expand their minds through learning about musical composers.

I used to teach my daughters to listen to the music as they watched (what we call the "old" cartoons) & they learned to predict happy, scary, excited, fast & slow events in the cartoon.

Well, music teaches young children sooo much:

* count and number recognition (when using visuals or fingers) - in counting rhymes and songs

* increase vocabulary - new words in rhymes/songs

* rhyme - compare words phonems

* sense of beat and rhythm - by using musical instruments

* refine fine-motor skills - by manipulating musical instruments

* refine gross-motor skills - by moving to actions of the songs

* enhance hand-eye coordination - by managing instruments

* creates spacial awareness - through moving around in a specified area (using all of the area, but also high and low)

* enhance social skills - by cooperating with peers, and working towards common goal (e.g. the song)

* express emotion appropriately - by using movements and facial expressions to the words and melody of the song

* and so much more ...
