I have a HD DVR. The HDMI out is plugged into my HD TV. The component cable out is plugged into a Slingbox (non-HD version). Even when the TV is off and unplugged, the DVR senses when the HDMI cable is plugged into the TV because the Slingbox viewer shows the message "Your HDTV does not support HDCP" as soon as the HDMI cable is plugged in.

  1. HDMI includes audio, video, and control.

The Control part of the bus allows the two HDMI devices to exchange info about their capabilities.
