if i have a analog tv and a analog antena how does the antena pick up the single

  1. Your analog antenna picks up digital TV signals just like it picks up analog ones.

    In North America digital TV broadcasts use the same antennas and frequencies as analog ones. So your antenna doesn't "know" the difference between them.

    The difference between digital and analog signals is not in how they are sent from the TV station to you, the difference is in the information in the signal.

    Think about answering your telephone. If you talk to a person you can understand them. But if they are trying to send a fax to you, all you here is a mishmash of audio tones. But a  fax machine can decode the signal.

    There is nothing different in the phone lines between a voice and fax call, the difference is what information is being sent. Your phone line doesn't "know" which kind of call is coming through it.

    The converter box has a digital tuner that selects one of the digital channels and a specialized computer chip that converts the signal into the old analog type that your analog TV "understands".
