Question:

How does my friend do this simple card trick?

He took 3 cards out of a deck and showed them to me. He told me to 'pick the queen'. His left hand had 2 cards and the right he had 1. He put 1 card from the left hand down first then the other card from the right hand then he placed the last card from the left hand. He moved his left hand from left-to-right and vice versa with the right.

I watched carefully where the queen was placed and I picked correctly.

He did it again, same pace. I watched carefully again but this time I picked the wrong card, followed by another wrong selection and again.

What methods could he have used to make this trick possible?

I want to try this trick at work tonight. Thanks

  1. hmmi am not so sure, but i think maybe is a trick..well of course it is LMAO a magic trick. There is probably a spare card somewhere, under his sleeve? and was able to switch. Otherwise, this  trick tests how much you concentrate. maybe if you concentrated too hard, you end up picking the wrong one.

I know a few tricks myself, but i never heard of such. Sounds Very interesting. i might like to even try it for myself.

Sorry i havn't helped, but there are two ways to find out for youself.

    1-ask him to tell you

2-Tell him to repeat over and over, and while you are watching, think carefully of all the possibilities.

  2. Sorry but I'm not getting a clear picture of what's going on.

You have several good answers above nevertheless.

Keep in mind that a skillful card manipulator can do a double lift in such condition too.

double lift is handling 2 cards as 1.

David copperfield perform a card trick where 4 cards, 1 cards disappear and left 3 cards, but actually there are still 4 cards, he did a double lift to make 2 cards look like one.

maybe he have 4 cards there?

  3. He is magic, geeze.

  4. I really don't have a clue. At first I thought I knew what trick you were saying, but the way he did that ruled out my possibility. I would suggest watching him do the trick carefully. When you just say how a trick is done, it loses the visual content. It is not very easy to describe a card trick with all the details. It would be cool if you could video cam your friend doing the trick, put it on YouTube, and wrote the link. Otherwise it will be very hard to get an answer.

  5. its a sleight of hand, but there are a lot of ways to do this effect, if i cant see his handling, no way to tell just from text description.

  6. Next time he does the trick for you, and you do NOT pick the queen, (or whatever) reach over and flip up all the cards on the table.

Chances are there is no queen, it is gone! Where? Palmed or sleeved.

It sounds like the trick is based on a switch move. After you succesfully pick once, then watch CAREFULLY as he picks up the cards to repeat the trick. He may be substituting a different card for the queen. When he repeats the trick, and you see the card that you picked is not the queen, then you assume it is one of the other cards face down on the table, when in fact the card is not even there.

That is my best guess, I have done a similar trick many times, and it is repeatable, once or twice, and fun.

Of course I am just guessing, based on your limited description above, seeing the trick performed would help a lot, lol.

    Have fun!
