  2. The only two ways for the pipe to become radioactive is when the steel becomes exposed to thermal and epithermal neutrons, or for some radioactive isotope to become embedded in the side wall of the pipe (i.e. paint containing radioactive isotopes).

    Exposure to neutrons is definitely possible when certain well-logging tools are sent downhole and turned on.  An accidental prolonged exposure to a short section of pipe might activate that section of pipe.

    The minerology of the particular hole may contain higher concentrations of uranium ores.  Ground up finely, some of this ore may 'stick' to the pipe and increase radioactivity.
