  1. It is basically what its name implies.  The researcher studies a phenomenon by participating in it and observing the characteristics of it.  For example, if you wanted to study the culture of homeless people, you would actually go out and live with them in their environment and record what you see.  There are some issues involved in this method of study since the researcher has to decide how involved they want to get and whether their involvement will change the phenomenon they want to study.  Also, there are ethical issues if the group being studied is involved in criminal activity.  All that said, it is a fantastic way to get rich detail and insight on a social phenomenon.
