How does one become a diplomat or an ambassador? Does anyone know how some people get these jobs?

  1. Ambassadors are appointed by the President and confirmed by the Senate. Depending on who is president, approximately 75% of ambassadors are career foreign service officers. The remaining 25% are political appointees. Ambasadors are the official representative of the U.S. in other nations. There is only one ambassador per country.  There can be 100s or 1000s if diplomats in some countries.  If you discount CIA operataives, all diplomats are career foreign service officers.

    To work for the state department, you take the Foreign Service exam which is similar to the Civil Service exam, but more difficult, includes a multiple choice section, essay, and oral exam.
