What credentials does one need in order to become a American vice consul in another country? and could someone please describe the responsibilities and expectations of the job?

  1. Briefly, you have to become a Foreign Service Officer (this question has been addressed in various forms many times, so look for related answers;  also, here is the State Dept website: http://www.careers.state.gov/).

    Vice consuls are entry-level consular officers.  Most of the time, they are doing visas -- lots and lots of visas.  What can mitigate the drudgery of this are additional duties such as the E1 portfolio, the VIsas Viper portfolio, H visas, public outreach on visa issues, et al.

    VIce consuls also do immigrant visas and American Citizens Services, although Non-Immigrant Visas are the bulk of the responsibility.
