Several years ago I presented a jazz history program at an elementary school, but my music teacher friend retired. How do I resume these lectures without an inside contact?

  1. Call the principal and ask.  She may refer you to someone else- like the PTA contact- or the current music teacher-  but she should be able to help.  Good luck, good person!

  2. You could probably just call the school(s) directly, or write them ... and offer your program to them!

It's a total shame, but as I'm sure you know, many schools have had to cut back drastically on arts and music programs.  Not because they want to, but because many districts are so strapped for cash that they cannot justify the expenditure!

If you are offering a free or low-cost program, I'd guess that many schools would LEAP at the chance to have you guest-lecture.

Perhaps you'd want to get yourself some business cards and a brochure outlining the program that you offer ... and call the schools, asking if they'd be interested in looking over your printed material (that way they wouldn't have to make a snap-decision over the phone).

In any case, good luck to you ... I know my local school district is always happy to have guest-speakers.

  3. Have the teacher write you a good letter of rec.  Without that, admin would see your attempt as suspect so send in your resume with the letter and make sure it has full contact of the old teacher so they can reach the individual if needed.
