How does one build character? (my story)?

I've done some research and several people say that a good education builds your character. I'm researching this because I'm a rather quiet person, though I put a lot of thought into everything, and I'm an intense listener, I don't like being quiet! SO how can I change this...I feel a lot of pressure to impress people, that this will build my life and ultimately make me happy...? (I'm 19) I could really use some help on this subject.

  1. Don't worry. You shouldn't be so self-critical. I grew up being decribed as "quiet" and "shy" but since I became more confident (yes, a good education is important because it gives you confidence to be good at something that you are interested in) I have been described as "cool", (silly, I know. Because I'm not.) and people think I have integrity because I don't suck up to people in the way that more bubbly personalities sometimes seem to be doing. I don't spout c**p just to have something to say.

You don't need to change. But you do need to build your confidence. And you can do this by discovering what you enjoy and find a great career.

  2. You're quiet b/c you feel a lot of pressure to impress people. Saying nothing is better than saying the wrong thing, as is the tacit understanding of people in your situation. Try googling "social anxiety" and see what comes up. There may be a web site to give you some tips and exercises on spontaneous social interaction. Good Luck!

  3. I have found that the best way to build character is to help others. Volunteer. Go to your local salvation army with some friends and offer to help by cooking dinner one night. They will supply the food your just giving the staff a break for the night. It will help you realize that you are blessed in this life and that you have a lot to give to others. Another thing you can do is see if you can go in and help at a thrift store or any organization that offers help to the public for free. You have them all around you... go, ask if you can help.

Ask your family if they need help. Grandparents, Aunts uncles. If you have a neighbor that is elderly plant some flowers in their yard..do some yard work for free.

Helping others this helps to build your character more than anything!
