  1. Well, I can tell you what I've done:

    1) I've given up driving, gave up the car, so no more fossil fuel burning for me! (We have great public transporation.)

    2) I've started taking baths instead of showers, they use less water.

    3) I put aluminum foils on the windows in the back porch to reflect the summer heat and keep down cooling costs.

  2. use light reflective colours in the interiors so that less illumination will show the house brighter. use more compact florescent lamps and tube lights as traditional bulbs consume more power give less light and more heat.

use appliances like mixie, grinder having all the jobs to be done with it ready near by.

switch off fans etc when not needed even for short duration.

clear the utensils of any waste materials like curry leaves and leftovers. use water in a tub for initial wash of utensils, use fresh water only for final wash. keep the clean utensils in the inverted position to avoid further cleaning.

use less foaming detergents to wash clothes.

swipe the floor clean with cleaning agents, avoid washing.

use shower to bathe as it will limit the water use.

ensure that the taps do not leak

  3. Use common sense.

Water is continuously recycled by the earth.

Its never wasted. Its recycling is powered by the Sun.

Electricity is wasted by watching MTV etc.

Turn off lights when you leave the room etc.

I've addressed water and electricity, but I'm unclear what ect.... is.

    Ectoplasm perhaps?

If it is supposed to be an abbreviation for etcetera, try etc next time.

  4. To conserve the following steps can be used

1 . switching of lights and fans and other  when not in use.

2 . using CFL instead of ordinary tube lights.

3 . If u have a computer though it does not take much power ,   just use the stand by option when not in use.

4 . Well this wont help very much , try not opening the refrigerator doors much frequently.

    5. please dont use tube lights and CFL . Actually this is called day light savings and can be very useful.

    6. If u have a garden u can use the water which u use to bath as a method of irrigation as plats can also be grown using recycled water but the only problem is using water with soaps and detergent .

  5. fast cold showers, unplug the radio when not in use because its in standby mode, go to the mall when days get HOT (the mall is always cool) plus u can shop ....

  6. Leave NOTHING on stand-by, switch off at the socket.

Switch off lights when you leave the room/don't really need them.

Turn the tap off while you brush your teeth.

    Quick showers instead of baths.

Only fill the kettle for how many cups you need, don't over fill.

Try recyceling as much as you can too, plastic, glass, old clothes, foods like potato peelings and such like.

All I can think of atm. Hope it helped.

  7. Conserve energy by turning off lights you don't use and cutting off the water when your done with it. This also benefits you because your electric and utility bill won't be as high

  8. Don't forget to add more insulation to your loft and walls where possible - heating is a major enrgy use in the home!

  9. Heating and air conditioning are your worst energy consumers. Use solar thermal energy to heat home and your domestic hot water, even to dry your clothes on the line.  But before retrofitting for solar heating make sure your home is insulated to at least R2000 standards, which also calls for a healthy air exchange system that recaptures the heat in the air being exhausted.

Those R2000 standards also come close to giving you an optimum reduction in cooling costs.

In summer, because you are drying your clothes out on the line, you will not even be tempted to vent a drier indoors in  summer. But anyway if you absolutely must dry clothes indoors, put a dehumidifier in a closet and hang the clothes there. The dehumidifier recovers all the heat it creates to dry your clothing with minimum energy.

If you must use air conditioning, it is much more efficient to pump heat into cooler night air, or better yet into cold water, like a swimming pool.

But I don't need the cool at night! True, you pump the heat out of water at night, to create a takn of cold water to be used to cool the house when it is hot.

Make sure that your roof space is properly ventillated so that you do not have that heat radiating down on you, and of course, of course, keep the thermostat set low in winter, high in summer, so that you are not trying to maintain too large a temperature difference from outside.

Use window coverings to keep out unwanted sun and to avoid loss of heat in winter. In winter when the sun is shining in, leave those coverings off to collect sun.

If your house has a black-top drive, cover the black top with white or light covered sand to reflect the heat.

Your house grey water should all go to water lawn or garden, and be careful what you put down the drains.

You can take a proper bath with 2 litres of water. Our scout troop demonstrated this very well under a strategy to avoid having to carry and heat large amounts of water.

  10. take shorter showers, use lower watt light bulbs, set your thermostat one degree higher or lower, shut appliances off when not in use, fix leaky faucets, keep curtains closed to conserve heat or to keep cooler and the list of things we absentmindedly take for granted like have every light on when we only need one.

  11. You can save energy ...and keep your lifestyle with just a few changes:

Change the incandescent bulb for fluorescents. ...that helps a lot!

Adjust the thermostat a little (two or three grades up and down) will not affect you in summer or winter.

Use  as solar light as possible...open the blinds, curtains, clean windows.

Adjust the refrigerator one point warmer....clean it up frequently.

Walk as much as you can and use public transportation onces in a while.

  12. change to water saving facites, shower heads, put two two letter bottles filled with rocks in you're toilets tank (less water per flush), turn water off when brushing teeth. for electritie use energy star appliences, energy efficient litte balbs, keep fridge door closed when not needed.

  13. switch every thinf OFF

  14. When brushing teeth turn water off when its not being used, turn everything of then not being used and especially when you are not home, turn the tv off when not paying attention.
