How does one dispose of canned goods past "fresh date"?

I am in the process of cleaning an elder's basement and have found about a case of mixed canned goods that are past the "sell by" date. What's the safest way to get rid of them without having to open and empty them?

I think you should open the cans,dipsose of the contents & recycle the cans.

If you are doing a good turn then you should do it right.

Open them and eat them. Most canned goods will stay fresh for years, unless the can is damaged or shows bulging. Until a few years ago you did not see these dates; manufacturers add them so people will toss them out and buy new cans.
