  1. Most people who do handicrafts (e.g. pottery, quilting, weaving, knitting, woodworking, etc) started as a hobby, started winning awards, and word of mouth started them selling.  Your handicrafts have to be exquisitely made, unique, different from anything else on the market, and be something people want.

For example, a wooden toy company started with one man who has whittled for years, started making wooden toys, and people wanted them.  It grew eventually into a business as some people want non-plastic, non-toxic, simple, traditional toys and are willing to pay quite a lot for something handmade.  On the other hand, an expert seamstress designed a unique wall hanging, won an award at a textile arts show, sold the piece, but discovered there was no way she could go into production on it and make enough money to cover her costs, no less her time.

So what's your handicraft passion?  What do you do exceedingly well?  Does it appeal to a lot of people?  And how can you turn your skills to creating something unique will pay enough for to cover all of your production costs and time?
