You should contact the nearest Chinese Embassy, or consulate to you, and they can give you that information.

It's mostly for immigration.  Unless you are married to a Chinese national (registered in China)  with the intent of living in China, you can't really apply for a D visa..  

Even if you are a business owner,and/or have intentions of working and living abroad in China for more than a year, you still cannot obtain this type of visa.  You should obtain a z visa then apply for residence status in China at the Public Security Bureau.

If you have the appropriate invitation documents you will need to present the ORIGINALS at the Chinese Consulate:  

1.  Residence Approval Certificate issued by the Chinese public security bureau.

2.  Physical Examination Certificate for Foreign Citizen.
