Question:

How does one get a job in Los Angeles?

I've been unemployed for two months now and I can't get a job. No one will even interview me, and the temp agencies won't give me any work.

I'm running out of money and barely eating, I'm starting to wonder if maybe I'm not capable of work or something? I never went to college, but I did graduate from Highschool.

  1. You should check with the development in the L.A. Live area (Nokia and Staples Center) on Figeuroa in Downtown. They have 800 job openings. Check out the link I included below. It has information on the upcoming job fairs (next week, I believe!), as well as, the type of positions they have and the hourly rate. I hope that helps, good luck!

  2. I am also looking for a job now, and its hard work. Build on your credentials. Since you already have a previous job, that is one good credential provided that you did well on that job.

BUILD ON YOUR RESUME. Don't make it boring - make it stand out. there are resume agents out there that can help you. alternatively, make your friends review your resume for you and get their honest opinion.

What are your means of FINDING the job? are you looking for a certain career path? Or just something part-time/full-time? Some of the tips I can give you:

The internet is one resource, but definitely not the only one.

Get yourself dirty - walk around the city. Look for JOB FAIRS. Network yourself through organizations/friends, ask your peers if they know of a place that has a job opening. Also, you can go a college near your place. Look for a HUMAN RESOURCES or CAREER CENTER department of any sort. TONS of listings there. Go to your local library - ask them if they have local listings. Classified ads in the newspaper and CRAIGSLIST.

Sites like Careerbuilder, Monster, etc. They are countless, trust me. Go online.

If you want, look for a part-time job first. Earn a little money, then look for "schools" that offer 6-7 months of training in a particular field. This will increase your chance of getting employed.

    OK.good luck

  3. It took my girlfriend almost a year to find a job and she did go to college for 2 years, but didn't graduate. She was applying for everything after a while, fast food, waitresses, office jobs, etc. She didn't have any luck with temp agencies either. Quite a few places told her she needed to be bilingual English/Spanish, which she isn't.

The economy sucks right now and California is one of the worst places to find a job. I wish you luck and I wish I had some better news for you.

Temp agencies are trying to find companies that are hiring. Several different agencies come into our office every week to see if we need people to file or answer phones, which we don't need.

From past experience I have found that my friends are the best resources when it comes to job hunting. I've never had luck with jobs.com or monster.com, etc.  Like the other person suggested, craigslist.com is a good place to look.
