How does one go about acquiring a small keep?

I would check with Estate Agents in England.

That's what they call Real Estate Agents on that side of the puddle.

If you find one with the right connections, I´m sure you could get one.  Remember, though, there are very few, many are public property or owned by the government, and most are kinda crumbling to the ground.

Oh, except I don´t think any of the keeps have moats, much less moat trolls, and the fortresses that had moats, generally kept small dragons in them, or alligators.
