I am reminded of the lotus as a symbol (to answer your question) It is a beautiful flower that grows out of the mud around it. If you can strive to be like a lotus flower despite all the mud around you, that you came out of, you are pure.

I suppose it would be through Love as Pluto mentioned. Also, virtues like patience, the ability to listen to others openly and meditation practices would be helpful. It needs to be a lifelong quest. We are never static, though purity does imply a static condition of sorts.  

Probably one of the best ways to purify yourself is to throw off old nasty habits, attitudes and assumptions that are sticking to you like velcro. They may not be yours at all, but somehow you have managed to attract them and carry them around. There are a lot of books you can read that help you think about this and work through it. For example, the Vernon Howard books seem to be helpful in this respect. You can just pick up a random helpful lesson from skimming through one of these books.

One decides to 'purify' ones character often as a reaction to what is observed in other people that one finds unpleasant.   When this observation is made, one then, often smugly, deliberately chooses to behave very differently.  

It is a really obvious form of self-deception, surely?

The motivation is almost certainly an effort to approve of oneself more and more.
