How do you push yourself near the end of the mile? I almost had my planned mile time getting in the 6's but I failed at the end of my mile and couldn't push myself as hard as I could to the end with about 2 minutes to go and .38 left of the mile. HOW DO YOU DO IT?

  1. heres a little thing to remember during the mile

    peanut butter and jelly sandwich

    yes it soundddddddddddddsssssssss sillllllyyy

    but actually resonalble

the first lap is laying out the bread: its easy

the second lap is putting on the peanut butter: it just works this way for this part

the third lap is jelly: your legs start to feel like jelly here and its herd to go on(this is the most difficult lap and the one you have to push your self)

the forth lap is putting the bread together: if ya dont put the bread together good then you have a crappy sanwich same applys for the last lap of the mile. If you give up on this lap your whole effort is just wasted

just remember to push yourself on the 3rd lap and tell yourself that you just have to get through this one and the last lap is easy.

  2. from the training angle..  run 200s 400s and 800s at a pace lower than that and on tempo runs go at only a little bit above your goal mile time.

from the inspiration / motivation angle... try one of these

-scout out and see who runs near your goal time, stay focused on them the entire race as a sort of rabbit

-concentrate on a song with a fast beat or one that inspires you

-'the rubberband trick' pick someone out ahead and focus on them, pretend theres an imaginary rubberband between you and him/her pulling you along

-break it into increments.. 'keep this pace to the turn', 'keep this pace to the grandstands', 'keep this pace to the jumpers pit' etc

-just shut your brain off and force yourself through it (not saying this maliciously, but it does work sometimes)

    hope it helps!

  3. all i think about is-finish this last lap and i'm done

all i gott to do is finish this lap and i'm done

ONE LAP AND I"M DONE AND CAN GO EAT A FREAKIN BURGER!

yea so tats wat i tink

  4. It is better to run an even pace for the race, rather than try to push yourself to run faster near the end of the race.

If you want to run a certain time you should practice running intervals at that pace so your body is used to the speed and  you know how that speed feels during a race.
