I would like to know the break down for medals in gymnastics in the Olympics. I get that there is a group competition with 4 or 5 contestants for each team, but from there how does one qualify for the individual competitions and how does the all around competition work? I'm guessing that the all around medal is the person who does the best in all 4 of the apparatus', but what if that person doesn't even qualify from the team portion to compete in a particular individual apparatus? Basically, I would like to know what medals exist and how one goes about qualifying for those medals with emphasis on the all around medal. Thanks.

  1. 2 days ago (about) there was the qualification round, where the teams qualified for team final, 8 teams were picked to compete in team final.  These qualifications also qualified individuals for all-around competition and for individual medals on the individual apparatus; floor beam vault and bars.

Basically in order to qualify for the all-around competition, the gymnast had to compete in all 4 events, and had to have a combined score that was in the top 24 (i think.  maybe i'm wrong on that number..)

So the top 24 are picked to compete in all around.  However only 2 can be picked from each country, meaning that even if 3 chinese or 3 americans had the highest scores, only the top 2 would continue on.

The same is for all the individual events, pretty much..  One thing though, in order to qualify for the vault final, the gymnast had to do 2 vaults during qualifications.
