  1. Hi Harry,

As you have your mothers name etc, and dates you are well on the way. If you are in the UK you can go to your local Social Services Dept and ask to speak to an adoption organiser. They are most helpful, and you can request your file. On that file there may be numerous amounts of information, or very little dependant on your age. They are able to trace through National Insurance numbers where your Mother may be. However, they may not know if she has got married, and that is when it gets difficult.

You also have to prepare yourself that although you may get a result in finding her, she may not want to be found, and not want contact.

My experience was that I eventually found her after 16 years, and the only contact was letters a few times.

My husbands experience was the reverse, and there was a huge family welcoming, but this dwindled off after the initial honemoon period, so to speak.

Somewhere, if I can find the phone number I do have a phone number of a lovely lady who searches for Birth Parents for people. She is extremely good, and she has good results.

If you wish to contact me, please feel free, and I will do my best to put you in touch with her.

*****Edit...... when you emailed me you didn't give your email address, so I cannot give you the info. I have found the address of the lady who can help with the searching.

  2. In Scotland there's a charity called Birthlink.  They can trace back your family tree and other relations, and if you want, can act as a mediator in contacting your birth mum.  I just haven't had the guts to go far far yet myself!!  Mind you, if you're not in Scotland then this probably doesn't help that much, but I'd imagine there will be similar services set up throughout the UK.  Good luck!

  3. Try talking to your local family placement services (Part of your local council).  They will be able to give you a good few pointers.
