I've heard of people shipping them air cargo, buying an extra seat, etc... What is practical... any bass players out there that have done this?

  1. Buy a hard shell case and have them check it in the cargo bay.

  2. Although musical instruments are allowed in the cabin, may be your upright bass it too big. They may let you check it in. Just have a case for it. The cargo staff will take care of it just attach a 'fragile' sticker and inform the check in counter that it is a delicate instrument.
