Actually the answer depends upon where you are from.

I was taught to cut something with the fork in my left hand, the knife in my right. When the food has been cut put the knife down, transfer the fork to the right hand then eat. (By the way I am right handed)I use the fork with the tines pointing up.

My grandmother, who was born in Canada, used her fork in her left hand and used the back side of the fork more than the front side. (She held it with the tines pointing down)
