  1. Momentum.

("An object in motion tends to remain in motion.")

The earth had spin as it came together.

There's nothing to stop it spinning.

The same with the speed it has along it's orbit.

The pull of the sun is enough to keep it in an

'almost circle' but there's nothing to slow it down.

  2. Well, go back to the Earth's formation... there was a huge cloud of debris, that collected into a disk.  Clumps within that disk began to grow, and collide due to gravity.

Initially Earth was spinning as more & more objects landed on it;  it probably was spinning in the same plane as our orbit, meaning, the early Earth's equator was pretty well matched with the orbital plane of Earth.

About a billion years after it's intial formation, a Mars-sized object smashed into Earth, throwing some debris into orbit, and creating altering our rotational pole by about 23 1/2 degrees.  The debris thrown into orbit collected to form the moon, and it was only about 40 million miles out.  The Earth's "day" was only about 10.5 hours long.  As the moon orbited, it slowed the Earth's rotational speed, and likewise, the energy lost in speed was gained by the moon - it moved *away* from Earth.

Today, the Earth's rotational tilt of 23.5 degrees is attributed to the impact that caused the formation of the moon, and the moon *continues* to slowly move away from Earth - while the Earth's day slowly grows longer - by about a second every few thousand years.

  3. imagine a rock tied to the end of a piece of string now try to through that string forward wile holding the other end in your hand, you will see it moves around your hand now imagine your hand is "The Sun" the string is gravity and the rock is "The Earth" at some point the earth was given kinetic energy (movement) and got trapped in the suns gravitational pull not being able to escape and still having kinetic energy it had to spin around it.

But after that a rock of similar size collided with the earth and by the same way it stared spinning yet because it was join the earth stared spinning as well then the rock flew of the earth and became "The Moon"
