How does passenger rail in Canada compare to Amtrak in the U.S.A.?

Amtrak varies in on time performance.I am interested in long distance trains.

I would guess that it's better, just based on how terrible Amtrak is.  There are fewer and fewer routes so it's usually very unlikely that you can just go from point A to point B.  For example.  I live in Denver.  To get to Oklahoma City, I would have to first take a train to Chicago, and then to Oklahoma.  The whole trip would take 4 days when I could just drive it in 12 hours.  

It stops too often and doesn't go fast enough to make it worth the price.  It's cheaper to fly to New York than it is to take Amtrak from here.
