Question:

How does paying for WoW work?

I'll get it when Term 1 report cards are good, and Lich King'll be out by then.

Do I have to buy the CDs or just make an account?

I know the first month is free...

And you have to pay $30 to upgrade to BC...

Can someone show me the step-by-step method?

  1. Actually, I think you can get away with not buying the discs--and legally, too!  If I understand correctly, here's what you need to do: Download the trial.  It's free from the official website, and will get you into the game for 10-14 days.  There's an option there, I think on the login screen, to upgrade to an actual account.  Use that.  You'll need access to a credit or debit card, or a Paypal account, as Blizzard (like every other decent MMO company) uses automatic debiting to pay for the account.  You're looking at about $14.99 or so per month.  You can pay for multiple months at once, and it's usually a smidge cheaper per-month when you do it that way.

And yes, you do have to pay to upgrade to the Burning Crusade content.  However, unless you have a seriously burning need (no pun intended) to play one of the 2 new races, I wouldn't worry about it for awhile.  Get some good levels on your regular basic WoW character(s), then look at upgrading when you hit lvl 50 or so.

It's really pretty straightforward; Blizzard likes to do a lot of hand-holding.  Look all around on the official website and you should be able to find all the answers you're looking for!
