in very basic terms you have an array (a bunch!) of emitters/detectors, and by changing their phase (when they emit in relation to eachother) you can change the direction it is 'looking'.  you dont have to move anything physically.

the interference of the waves means that, with the exception of where it is 'looking', there is little or no signal
