  1. The egg cell in pistillate flowers needs pollen from staminate flowers of the same sort of plant for ( sexual ) reproduction. Some plants are pollinated by insects ( Melons f.e. ), some by wind ( ginkgo f.e. )

    Plants having the male and female reproductive organs in different flowers are called dioecious.
