How does promoting safety support a company's values?

if a company makes certain considerations in putting health and safety as a key element of employment for their workers - how can this support their values?

there are a couple of reasons for promoting health and safety -

asside from being an employer that is aware of the needs of their people and operating with beliefs that if you take care of your people they will take care of you -

1- health costs - when people are sick it costs the company money - how?  first just the cost of health benefits but, secondly when someone is out either that work doesn't get done or you have to hire extra people to account for absenteeism

2- safety costs - the same reasons as in health but you have to also consider the additional costs of dealing with government paperwork to explain the saftety/accidents - fines etc....
